Jacqui Naylor?s new album sees the Californian songstress combining original compositions, Rock/Pop and Jazz covers and her trademark ?acoustic smashes?. The provocatively titled YOU DON?T KNOW JACQ further unmasks the many talents of a singer compared by Jazz Times to Joni Mitchell. Listeners can look forward to a mix of her very latest material and rearranged versions of her most popular songs.
She kicks off with a Gospel-inspired rendering of the Bee Gees? classic ?How Deep Is Your Love?, and later also applies a Doors-style Drums and Hammond organ soundscape to the Rolling Stones? ?Miss You?. She clearly delights in exploring unfamiliar genres while at the same time proving her artistic versatility.
Her own songs are profound, expressive but reassuringly warm. ?Celebrate Early and Often? was in fact premiered by Jacqui at her own wedding, and ?Dreamin? Big With You? is dedicated to the son of her drummer, Josh Jones. While the latter are brand-new tracks, ?Thank you, Baby? originally appeared on the EAST/WEST album ? but the reworked version heard here invites us to revisit Naylor?s singer-songwriter and Country roots.
An integral feature of YOU DON?T KNOW JACQ are, of course, Naylor?s unique acoustic smashes ? unlikely pairings of Jazz lyrics with Rock/Pop rhythms. Both the rendezvous of ?My Funny Valentine? with AC/DC?s ?Back in Black? and the mating up of Gershwin?s ?Summertime? with ?Whipping Post? by the Allman Brothers are ingenious marriages of different moods.
Vocal Jazz at its finest. YOU DON?T KNOW JACQ is perhaps Jacqui Naylor?s most accomplished album to date ? soft but subtly penetrating, but always abounding with curiosity and creativity. Maybe it?s time you got to know Jacq?
