The Smile Style series returns with its familiar blend of fresh and
invigorating tunes. The third volume – once more compiled by Ralf
Ilgner aka DJ Gardener of Eden – comprises songs guaranteed to let the
sun shine as it takes us through five decades of Pop history and a mix
of NuJazz, Soul and World beats.
While Paris Combo get us into a French groove, Stee Downes gets down
with the smooth-grooving ”When I’m Feeling”. Elsewhere, the Bahama Soul
Club pick up the beat with a highly danceable piece of Latin-Lounge,
and the late but great Eartha Kitt treats us to her timeless and
tantalizing ”C’est Si Bon”. Nouvelle Vague also get hips swinging and
heels clicking with a cheekily lascivious cover, and not even the
grumpiest cynic will be able to resist when Hildegard Knef (another
grande dame of postwar chanson) rolls out her enticingly rendered ”Sei
mal verliebt”; the instantly recognizable German version of ”Let’s Fall
in Love” will have listeners feeling blue about having almost reached
the end of the album.
But nobody’s stopping you from just pressing ”repeat” and once more enjoying this engaging trip to good-mood-land …
